About This Call
The City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places, in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places, invites qualifications from professional artists or artist teams to create monumental works of public art for the Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation and Expansion Project. This is an international open call to all professional artists or artist teams. Applications from architects, landscape architects, or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team. City of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County employees, as well as selection panelists and their immediate family members, are excluded from participation.
The project team has identified four opportunities for public art integration with an estimated total public art budget of $4,325,625: (1) Monumental Exterior Work for Convention Center Park ($1.3 million) - a signature work as the focal point of the 5.8 acre park on the western facing side; (2) West Concourse – North and South Junior Ballrooms Walls ($1 million) - enhancement to two-story walls in the grand lobby; (3) Northeast Grand Ballroom Lobby Wall and Floor ($1.3 million) - artwork intervention for the lobby area; (4) VIP Ballroom Exterior Wall and Entry ($650,000) - artwork feature enhancing the transition from garage parking to the ballroom. Artists may be recommended for one or more opportunities. When conceptualizing projects, artists should consider permanence, maintenance requirements, South Florida's environmental conditions (harsh sunlight, rain, wind, seawater proximity), and LEED standards being pursued for the overall project.
The Miami Beach Convention Center will complete construction by December 2017. Application deadline is January 16, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Work sample requirements: 0-10 images, 0-3 audio files, 0-6 video files, with a minimum of 1 and maximum of 19 total samples. The selection timeline includes initial PAC meeting January 26-30, 2015; City approval February 2-6, 2015; Miami-Dade approval February 10, 2015; artist orientation Late March/Early April 2015; finalist interviews and recommendations June 2015; contract approval July-September 2015; and selected artists begin full design development October 2015. This is a time-sensitive project requiring strict adherence to advertised deadlines. Contact: [email protected].
