City of Loveland Public Library Artwork Commission

The City of Loveland is seeking an artist to create artwork for a 15-foot wide by 10-foot tall curved wall in the newly opened addition to the Loveland Public Library. The theme should connect to the natural environment of the Loveland area and historic Loveland, including buildings, people, and industry. Artists may interpret this theme as desired, though a definite connection is required and the work should be more representational than abstract.

The wall is well-lit by 6 canister ceiling-mount lights and is located at the end of a main corridor on the second floor adjacent to the Library's Administrative offices and three computer laboratories. The art/mural may be applied directly to the wall surface or through removable panels; other installation mechanisms will be considered. The awarded artist is responsible for site preparation and installation, working closely with city staff and contractors. The project should be completed by January 31, 2012.

It is desired that the awarded artist will incorporate an educational component, enabling the public to participate in an on-site demonstration of the creative and/or installation process. All artists must currently reside in Colorado. Applicants must provide a statement of intent describing their method of working with and educating the public, including 3 references and a detailed budget covering personnel, materials, supplies, and rental equipment. Submit 5 digital images of completed large-scale artistic work plus a sketch, painting, or model of the intended artwork. Project budget range: $15,000–$25,000. Artists are expected to carry their own general liability insurance and work at their own risk. Proposals will be reviewed by a 7-member committee including Library Board members, Library and City staff, Friends of the Library, members of the general public, and artist community members.
