About This Call
The City of Loveland Art in Public Places Program seeks an artist to create a suspended, aerial public art installation for the Northern Colorado Regional Airport (FNL). The Northern Colorado Regional Airport was established in 1963 and is jointly owned by the Cities of Loveland and Fort Collins. The 22,000 square foot terminal building is currently under construction and will open in October 2024, serving as a multimodal transportation hub for the region.
The suspended art installation will be located in the main terminal seating area and should interpret the themes of aviation, nature, history, and local community. The piece must not exceed 2 feet in height and will be set at least 10'3" above floor level. The ceiling has been reinforced to accommodate up to 400 lbs. total weight from four suspension points. The suspended art feature may include an energy-efficient lighting element. The selected artist/artist team will be responsible for creating an installation that appeals to a breadth of ages and backgrounds by interpreting aviation history and functions, creating engaging and informative artwork, and reflecting Northern Colorado wildlife, flora, fauna, and culture. An artwork installation by spring 2025 is acceptable.
Applications must include: current resume highlighting commissions and sculpture installations; 5-10 digital images of past public art installations completed within the last five years, including at least one with suspended elements (no more than 2 images per project); a one-page preliminary statement addressing interest in the project and experience with similar scope and scale; and 3 professional references. Up to three finalists will be selected to present design concepts and will each receive a $1,000 honorarium. The project budget is $30,000, including design, fabrication, insurance, installation, travel, contingency, and all incidental costs. The awarded artist/artist team will enter into a contract with the City of Loveland and may not install a similar project within a 60-mile radius of the installation site.
