About This Call
The Art in Public Places Commission of the City of Longmont invites artists to design and develop two functional and creative bicycle racks. One rack will be installed at 1st and Main Streets in Longmont, Colorado, at the location of Cheese Importers, a local family-owned business. The second rack will be installed adjacent to the library, in close proximity to the Civic Center. Exact locations will be determined once winning designs are selected.
Bicycle racks must accommodate between 8 and preferably 12 bicycles with two points of contact to minimize wheel bending. Racks must allow for ease when locking bikes with U-locks or cable locks, accommodate various bicycle and wheel sizes (10" to 27"), and be constructed of durable materials for permanent outdoor exposure. The footprint must not exceed 8 feet in width and 30 feet in length, though multiple elements are permitted. Racks must meet safety requirements as determined by the City's Risk Manager. Designs may be colorful, whimsical, and imaginative, incorporating themes such as cheese, downtown, the Arts & Entertainment district, green/environmental messages, historic references, or family-friendly concepts.
Submit electronic images or hard copy sketches (8.5" x 11") with artist contact information, three recent project references, artist statement, materials description, and installation sketch. Artists may submit up to two proposals. Open to artists residing in the USA. A citizen selection panel will review designs and select winners. The winning artist receives $4,500 for the final design and completed bicycle rack, plus up to $500 shipping stipend. The City is responsible for installation. Winners will be notified the week of September 23, 2013, with completion and installation targeted for November 2013. Submit materials by August 30, 2013 to Lauren Greenfield, Art in Public Places Administrator, City of Longmont, 400 Quail Road, Longmont, CO 80501, 303.651.8924, [email protected].
