About This Call
The City of Lewisville is seeking qualifications from artists to create an indoor public art installation for the Lewisville Public Library. The artwork should be sculptural in nature and wrap around or climb a tall brick column in the library's atrium. The work should utilize the height of the column and surrounding space to provide a visually striking component that will inspire wonder, draw the eye upward, and excite engagement.
The Lewisville Public Library is a gathering place for thousands of monthly visitors and features a large children's wing, adult and teen sections, world language and digital media collections, and a makerspace called The Hive. The library is home to several existing public artworks including "Building Blocks" by Kevin Robb and "The Alphabet Chair" by Sarah Peters. This project is funded by the City of Lewisville Public Art Program and partially funded by a financial gift from the Friends of the Lewisville Public Library.
The selection panel is open to artwork in all media and materials. Artistic elements including organic shapes, movement, interactive components, and illumination are highly desirable. Works using sound or creating noise are not preferred as they may interrupt library users. The artwork should be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials. The brick column is cosmetic around a structural column with weight limits and power source conduit lines. The budget for this commission is up to $75,000 USD, inclusive of all costs including design fee, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and project documentation. The selected artist will be required to participate in virtual meeting check-ins with the selection panel and provide regular updates to city staff throughout the fabrication process. Applicants must submit a Statement of Interest, up to eight digital images and/or video samples of past work, a résumé or curriculum vitae, and up to three professional references via the CaFÉ online application system.
