About This Call
The City of Lauderhill is requesting submissions from artists for the City Utility Box Art Program. The program seeks artists or teams of artists to create artwork to be digitally printed and used in vinyl wrapping of utility boxes throughout the city. Selected artist(s) will be awarded $750 stipends for their artwork. Ten utility boxes located in different sections of the city have been selected for this public art program, which is designed to transform common traffic control utility boxes into distinctive works of art and create a more vibrant, attractive cityscape.
Artwork must be original and created by the applying artist(s) for this project. The artwork should be inspiring and connected to the sense of place of Lauderhill, conveying a positive creative message that visually complements the immediate surrounding area. Artists are encouraged to imagine the work as a continuous piece covering the utility box, considering placement of components so all sides are complete. Original artwork can be designed in any 2D medium. Artwork may be literal or abstract and may represent various aspects of the city's history, reflect specific neighborhoods, or reflect a specific genre of art, music, or design. Artwork must not contain political statements or persons, religious references or symbols, copyrighted or trademarked material, or corporate or organizational branding.
All artists residing, working, or attending classes in the South Florida area are eligible. Entries must be original designs suitable for viewing by all ages. Artists will receive an initial disbursement of $500, with the remaining $250 paid upon project completion. Artists are responsible for creating artwork in a format suitable for print on vinyl and for working directly with the printer/installer to adjust artwork and materials for printing and installation. The City will provide detailed utility box specifications, install selected designs as vinyl wraps, and maintain the artwork. The City owns all installed artwork and reserves the right to copy, reproduce, and adjust it as needed. Artists retain copyright of their artwork. Artwork is a long-term installation, and artists must complete projects within a stipulated timeframe established upon acceptance.
Submittal requirements include a description of the design, color concept drawings with 3 views (1 full view and 2 detail views), 3-5 images of similar previous work, and all images in JPG or PDF format labeled with artist name. File specifications: JPEG or JPG only, 1,200 pixels or greater on the longest side, under 5 MB, sRGB color profile. Artists may submit multiple designs, with each design requiring a separate completed application. Artists may request a particular box location, though location assignment is not guaranteed.
