About This Call
The City of Lauderhill seeks an artist or artist team to design and create a sculpture for the Fire Station 9/11 memorial. The sculpture must utilize an existing pentagonal base as its foundation and incorporate a fragment of metal salvaged from the Twin Towers as a prominent feature honoring firefighters. Artists are encouraged to incorporate mosaic artwork onto the sculpture's surface, though other creative visions are welcome. The design should include lighting features that enhance visibility and impact during nighttime hours, illuminating both the mosaic artwork and metal fragment.
The sculpture must be constructed to withstand South Florida weather conditions and meet all hurricane code requirements and Florida Building Code standards. Materials should be highly durable and low-maintenance, accounting for exposure to subtropical climate, humidity, intense sunlight, high winds, and heavy rains. The artist team will work with a lighting professional and Florida general contractor. Proposals should include a collaborative workshop component where firefighters contribute to creating a distinct element that becomes part of the artwork.
Applicants must submit 3-5 digital images of previously completed work, a résumé, and a statement of interest (maximum 3,000 characters) via CaFÉ online. There is no application fee. Selected artist(s) will receive a $500 stipend to develop a concept proposal. The project budget is $40,000 (not including lighting). This opportunity is open to Florida-based artists and artist teams. Site visits will be required during the design finalization phase.
