About This Call
The City of Laramie, Laramie Main Street Alliance, and Laramie Public Art Coalition are seeking an artist or artist team to create public artwork for the 3rd Street Gateway project. The Wyoming Department of Transportation will complete updates to intersections, curbs, and sidewalks in summer 2025. The artwork will signify the entrances to downtown on both the south and north sides of 3rd Street, serving as a core part of the community experience. Artwork that is visible both day and night and interactive with cars and pedestrians has been identified through previous planning. The selected artist or artist team will be contracted to create a design based on community visits and information gathering sessions. Artists should be adept at working with community and excited about creating artwork that reflects the spirit of Laramie, Wyoming.
The total budget is $300,000: $15,000 for the conceptual design phase (including artist fee and travel), and $285,000 to complete the approved artwork (including artist fees, travel, fabrication, installation, and other costs). A selection committee including community members, local artists, City Hall staff, a WyDOT representative, and a Laramie Main Street representative will select finalists based on artistic merit, proven ability to work in community, and project interest. Finalists will be paid $100 to participate in a virtual interview. One artist or artist team will be selected to work with the Laramie team. Installation is ideally scheduled for fall 2026.
Applications must include: a letter of interest (2000 characters max), a community statement describing artistic practice with community involvement (2000 characters max), CV/resume (2 page limit), up to 10 digital images of relevant completed artwork and up to 2 videos if essential, and a media script with short descriptions of each artwork (100 words per artwork max). All applications must be submitted through Call for Entry. The call is open to all artists ages 18 and over. Applications will be disqualified if required materials are not submitted, directions are not followed, or if the letter of interest or media work samples include a proposal for the artwork. Finalists will be notified by March 28, 2025, with finalist interviews scheduled for the week of April 7, 2025, and artist selection by April 18, 2025.
