About This Call
The City of Lakewood and the Heritage, Culture and the Arts Division are seeking proposals for a permanent public art project to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Lakewood, CO. The project should be a large-scale public artwork that incorporates community engagement or interactivity and integrates with an existing historical landmark within Addenbrooke Park at the corner of Garrison and W Center Avenue in Lakewood. The artwork should reflect the diverse citizens of the city, honor its history, and inspire the community to look toward the future.
The RFP is open on a national level to all professional artists, with preference given to artists who live or work in Colorado or its neighboring states of Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. Artists must have demonstrated capacity to create and install three-dimensional artworks that are innovative and incorporate interactivity and/or community participation. The existing stone fireplace at the site, built by the Addenbrooke family with stones collected from around the world, must be incorporated, honored, or paid homage to in the new artwork. The sculpture must be visually dynamic from 360 degrees, fabricated with no dangerous edges or protrusions, inaccessible for climbing, and made of durable materials suitable for Colorado's variable climate. All media and materials will be considered.
The total budget for the artwork is $80,000 USD, all-inclusive of artist's fees, materials, design, engineering, basic concrete foundation, insurance, permits, fabrication, labor, shipping/storage, travel, and installation. No more than three finalists will be selected and will each receive a $1,000 honorarium for full conceptual proposals. Finalists will be notified by September 4, 2018, with formal conceptual proposals due October 22, 2018. Public input on finalists will occur November 1–30, 2018, and the final artist selection is scheduled for December 10, 2018. Fabrication and installation are estimated for January–August 2019, with project completion and unveiling estimated for September 20, 2019. Proposals must include resume/CV, visual documentation of similar completed large-scale public artwork, up to three preliminary renderings, artist's statement, estimated budget with itemization, and explanation of longevity and maintenance.
