About This Call

The City of Hood River is commissioning an original Gorge Bike Hub art installation to be located at the intersection of 3rd and State Street at the heart of a recently completed Urban Renewal project. The installation should capture the beauty, diversity and vibrancy of the community. A permanent piece of public art will enhance the location, creating a distinctive sense of place and memorable experience accessible to everyone.

The Hood River Gorge Bike Hub was completed in 2016 as part of a larger $5M Urban Renewal project in downtown Hood River. Single as well as multiple piece works will be considered. The artwork must be designed and fabricated for long-term outdoor durability and ease of maintenance, including strong wind resistance. Any installations taller than 11 feet will need to have a certified engineer's stamp of approval.

The project budget is $20,000, all inclusive, covering design, development, fabrication, delivery, installation, and any necessary engineering. A plaque with details of the art, the artist, City of Hood River Urban Renewal Board, and Art of Community will be included with the installation. The displayed work will be regionally promoted. Submissions will be evaluated by a selection committee consisting of members of Art of Community based on artistic quality, context, compatibility with the site, appropriateness to the site, materials' suitability and safety, public safety, environmental impact, media, diversity, and feasibility. The selection panel will select one artist or proposal to be submitted to the City of Hood River Urban Renewal Agency for final review and approval. The project is open to all artists from the region regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Artist teams are eligible to apply. Submit five to ten art samples of previously completed work and/or a specific proposal for the site. Images should be saved in JPG format (150 dpi minimum, 5x7 minimum, 2MB max). Contact Kristen Godkin at [email protected] or 541-490-2451 with questions.
