City of Emeryville: Shellmound/Powell Street Bridge Art Program

The City of Emeryville is soliciting applications from teams of artists, lighting designers, and landscape architects for a public art installation at the Powell Street Bridge and surrounding public right-of-way areas in the Shellmound Street District. The Shellmound Street District is located in the heart of Emeryville between the Union Pacific railroad and Interstate-80, running from 63rd Street to Christie Avenue. The Powell Street overpass is a major east-west thoroughfare that visually bisects Shellmound Street and serves as the focus of this art site.

The selected team will design, fabricate, and install a unique, innovative public art installation incorporating a lighting component and other artistic elements for the Powell Street Bridge and nearby public areas. The proposal should also provide two written documents suggesting themes, locations, and unified concepts for art installations and landscape improvements on both adjacent private property and public rights of way. The proposal may assume a planting palette consistent with bay-friendly landscaping standards.

This RFQ is open to teams comprised of visual artists and landscape architects residing in the US. The team must include a visual artist with experience producing a minimum of two permanent, exterior public art projects similar in scale and complexity to this project. If the artist does not have experience producing public artwork incorporating lighting elements, a professional lighting designer must be included on the team. Work sample requirements: 1-12 images and 0-3 videos (1-12 total samples minimum). Entry deadline: December 31, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. MST.
