About This Call
The City of Duarte is seeking artists to create artwork for utility boxes throughout the city with the theme "Duarte's Route 66 – Past, Present, & Future" in celebration of Route 66's centennial in 2026. All approved designs will be printed on vinyl and installed on City-owned utility boxes by a third-party vendor. Artists may submit up to three design proposals for each Call for Artists cycle, with one application required for each proposed design.
The original artwork can be designed in any 2D medium, though digital format using the provided template is encouraged. The City will also accept photographs or scans of physical art. Selected artists must convert final designs to PDF, .ai, .psd, TIFF, or JPEG format, with TIFF and JPEG requiring minimum 300 DPI and 2,000 pixels. Three utility box configurations are available: Traffic Controllers and Meter Pedestals (stipend $950), Meter Pedestals Only (stipend $550), and Irrigation Control Boxes Only (stipend $400).
Artwork submissions must reflect the overall theme and incorporate related subthemes: "Faces & People" and "Pop Culture & Entertainment" for Traffic Controllers/Meter Pedestals configurations, and "Landscapes" for Irrigation Control Boxes. Ten specific locations are available throughout Duarte along Huntington Drive, ranging from the City's Town Center to residential areas and commercial intersections. Artists may have multiple submissions chosen in the same calendar year, provided the total stipend remains within the prevailing monetary limit of less than $1,000.
