City of Duarte Request for Designs for Utility Box Vinyl Wraps

The City of Duarte is seeking designs for vinyl wraps on four utility boxes located throughout the city. Each utility box location has been assigned a specific theme: Route 66 (Huntington Drive and Mountain Avenue), Medical Health (Duarte Road and Circle Road), Transportation (Fasana Road and Highland Avenue), and Childhood (Huntington Drive and Crestfield Drive). Artists may submit up to two design proposals per cycle, but only one design per artist can be selected by the City per calendar year.

Original artwork can be designed in any 2D medium. Applicants are encouraged to develop designs in digital format using the provided template, but photographs or scans of physical art are also accepted. Selected artists must convert final designs into PDF, .ai, .psd, TIFF, or JPEG format. TIFF and JPEG files must be a minimum of 300 DPI and 2,000 pixels. All approved designs will be printed on vinyl and installed on City-owned utility boxes by a third-party vendor. The City and vendor will support selected artists with final design submissions and modifications.

Submissions must include: a completed application, original artwork, an artist statement (200 words maximum) describing interest in the project and how the art will beautify the area, an artwork statement (200 words maximum) interpreting the design in relation to the theme, and optionally a resume and one to three examples of previous artwork. Selected artists will be paid a $750 stipend for designs chosen for utility boxes with only a traffic signal cabinet, plus an additional $200 stipend for designs for locations that also include a meter pedestal. The stipend will be paid half upon selection and half after final installation. The City will cover installation and maintenance costs. Project installation is scheduled for January 2025.
