City of DeSoto - Art Integration at the ARC in Curtistene S. McCowan Park

The City of DeSoto is seeking artists to create a commissioned artwork for the new Aquatics and Recreation Center (ARC) located at Curtistene S. McCowan Park, 1129 South Uhl Road, DeSoto, TX 75115. The artwork will be installed on the northeast wall of the main entry lobby and must measure 26 feet high by 18 feet wide. The project theme is "So Much to Love" (About DeSoto), and artists are encouraged to review the DeSoto Cultural Arts Master Plan, which emphasizes public art representing the soul of the city and utilizing parks and open spaces for art display.

The total project budget is $110,000, covering all costs including artist fees, fabrication, installation, shipping, insurance, and related expenses. Artists will receive an honoraria of $1,500 upon successful proposal submission. Artwork must be fabricated from safe and durable materials of the highest technical quality and should include a cleat system or D rings for installation. Eligible media includes mixed media, printed vinyl, or paintings (wall application only). Artists must be willing to work with City of DeSoto staff and make revisions as requested.

The selection committee will evaluate submissions based on theme alignment, client alignment, originality, creativity, technical skill, conceptual depth, and visual impact. The application deadline is August 14, 2024 at 10 PM CST. Shortlisted artists will be notified September 5, 2024, and will submit a Concept Design Proposal (5-10 images and artist statement) by October 3, 2024. Selected artists will participate in virtual interviews on October 17, 2024, and a mobilization meeting the week of October 21, 2024. Installation is tentatively scheduled for October 2025. Selected artists must obtain required permits, maintain general liability insurance naming the City of DeSoto as additional insured, provide detailed maintenance instructions, and document colors and custom details.
