About This Call

The City of Denver is seeking artists for a public art commission on West Quincy Avenue, a major traffic artery in southwest Denver's Fort Logan/Pinehurst neighborhood. The area includes parks and recreation facilities such as Bear Creek Park, Harvey Park, and is adjacent to Fort Logan National Cemetery. The neighborhood is approximately ten minutes by car to the Colorado Rockies via Highway 285.

The Project Selection Panel has identified potential public art locations, including the grassy parkway between the north and south bound lanes of Sheridan Boulevard from Hampden to West Quincy Avenue, which passes in front of Fort Logan Cemetery. A second location could be unspecified areas along West Quincy Avenue. Artwork must be highly durable and extremely low-maintenance to withstand Denver's severe weather conditions, including hot summers and heavy snowfalls. Up to four artists or artist teams will be short-listed as semi-finalists and asked to participate in interviews or prepare proposals. Semi-finalists will receive an honorarium of $500 (in state) or $700 (out of state) to prepare and present proposals in person, though all proposal expenses including travel and per diem must be paid by the semi-finalists from the honorarium.

The total budget for this commission is approximately $37,000, inclusive of all costs including design fees, consultation fees, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, per diem, project documentation, and contingency expenses. Artists working in any media are eligible to apply, and emerging artists are encouraged to submit. Applications must include eight digital images of previously completed artworks, a statement of interest (250 words/1,000 characters maximum), and a one- to two-page résumé. Artists may apply individually or as multi-person collaborations. All materials must be submitted online via the CaFÉ system with no application fee. The final recommendation will be presented to the Public Art Subcommittee, Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs, and the Mayor for final approval.
