About This Call

The City of Denver is seeking an artist or artist team to create public artwork for the west façade of the new Police Training Facility Building. The property is located in an urban, industrial area bordered by Interstate 25 to the west, the South Platte River to the south, and Park Avenue to the east. A new Light Rail line will run parallel to the building along I-25. The panel seeks an artist experienced with large-scale projects who can work collaboratively with the design team. The artwork should have both day and night presence and may interact with Light Rail and car traffic from I-25.

Up to five artists or artist teams will be selected as semi-finalists and invited to interview or prepare a proposal. Semi-finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium to prepare and present proposals in person; all proposal expenses including travel and per diem must be covered by the artist from this honorarium. The final artist selection will be approved by the Public Art Committee, Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs, and the Mayor. The budget for the commission is approximately $95,000, inclusive of all costs: design fee, consultation fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, per diem, project documentation, and contingency.

Applicants must submit eight digital images of previously completed work, a statement of interest (maximum 500 words/2,000 characters), and a one- to two-page résumé via the CaFÉ online system. Artists working in kinetic, sound, or media may submit a supplemental DVD of no more than five minutes. There is no application fee. Artists working in any media are eligible; previous public art experience is not required. The deadline for entry is February 5, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Semi-finalists will be selected in March 2010, with finalist selection and notification in April 2010.
