About This Call

The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs is seeking an artist or artist team for a site-specific public art commission for the third phase of improvements at Parkfield Lake Park in northeast Denver. The estimated budget for the artwork is $88,000. The new construction is adjacent to the Montbello Recreation Center and will include lighted multipurpose soccer and football fields, baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, a regional playground, an urban skate plaza and other facility improvements. The park is being designed to comply with the City's Executive Order 123, which mandates sustainable or "green" building practices in all publicly funded projects.

Artists working in any medium, including sound, earthen works and interactive sculpture, are invited to submit proposals for an original, site-specific art installation. The selected artist will work with the design team to incorporate artwork throughout the entire park, with possibilities for functional integration including play areas, gathering places, gardens, promenades and Parkfield Lake shoreline. Up to three artists will be short-listed as semi-finalists and will receive an honorarium of $800 to prepare and present a final proposal in person.

Applicants must submit eight digital images of previously completed artworks, a letter of interest of no more than 1000 words, and a current résumé of no more than two pages. Artists submitting kinetic, sound or media works may also send a DVD of no more than five minutes. The total contract amount of approximately $88,000 is inclusive of all costs including design fee, consultation fees, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, per diem expenses, project documentation and contingency. All applicants should consider long-term conservation and maintenance, as public art projects are exposed to weather and subject to vandalism. Semi-finalists are encouraged to consult with a professional conservator prior to final proposal submission.
