About This Call

The Denver Sheriff's Department seeks a public art memorial to honor four officers killed in the line of duty. A new memorial will be created at the entrance of the Denver County Jail facility, which is currently being upgraded and expanded. The selection panel seeks a unique, one-of-a-kind three-dimensional artwork in all media and materials appropriate to the memorial site and suitable as a backdrop for formal commemorative events. Planted materials and incorporated landscape design may be considered in irrigated areas. The artwork must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor exposure.

This project is open to Colorado artists regardless of race, color, creed, gender, gender variance, national origin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion or affiliation, or mental or physical handicap. Artists working in any media are eligible, and previous public art experience is not required. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Applicants may apply as a single artist or multi-person collaboration.

Approximately $65,000 USD is available for this commission, inclusive of all expenses including the artist's design fee, consultation fees, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, and contingency costs. Prevailing wage requirements will apply for all work done on City property. Applicants must submit eight digital images, a résumé, and an artist's statement of no longer than 2000 characters via www.callforentry.org. One to three semi-finalists will be selected for interviews with the panel. If a formal proposal is requested, the artist will receive an honorarium to prepare and present the proposal in person. Semi-finalists are expected to pay for their own travel expenses from the honorarium. A pre-submission meeting will be held on October 5, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the County Jail (10500 E. Smith Road, Denver, CO). RSVP to [email protected].
