About This Call

The City of Denver is seeking artists to create public art for the new Lowry Fire Station, being constructed with Better Denver Bond funding. The station will serve the southern end of Lowry to meet Denver Fire response times and provide backup services on the east side of Denver. Construction will begin in summer 2012 and continue into mid to late 2013. The new facility is designed as a classical firehouse by OZ Architecture and will house a single engine company with future capability to expand to two companies.

The selection panel seeks a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork appropriate for a Fire Station and the multi-generational Lowry community. Artwork may be free-standing sculptures near the exterior of the building or integrated with the exterior (frieze, bas relief, architectural sculpture). Three-dimensional artwork in all media is welcome, though materials that highlight or complement the historic, traditional materials of the station building (brick, stone, terracotta, glass) are preferred. All artwork must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor exposure. This project is open to Colorado artists currently living and working in the state, including emerging artists. Approximately $45,000 USD is available for this commission, inclusive of all expenses related to creation, lighting, fabrication, transportation, installation, and prevailing wage requirements.

Applicants must submit eight digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. Single artists or multi-person collaborations may apply. One to three semi-finalists will be selected for interviews with the selection panel. If a formal proposal is requested, the artist will receive an honorarium to prepare and present the proposal in person. A pre-submission meeting will be held on January 24, 2012 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building, 201 W. Colfax Ave, Conference room 4.I.3. RSVP to [email protected].
