About This Call
The City and County of Denver, in partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), is seeking an artist or artist team for a public art commission on the Central Park Boulevard/I-70 Interchange project. This project will provide a direct connection across I-70 between the Stapleton development on the south side and the Northfield development on the north side. The design/build team plans to begin construction in summer 2010 with anticipated completion by the end of 2011.
The selection panel has no stipulations regarding media, subject matter, or style, but seeks an artist accustomed to working on projects of this size and scope. Areas of interest include the Sand Creek Trail connections and open spaces, spaces adjacent to the Central Park Boulevard bridge, retaining walls or abutments of the bridge, transitions from the Interchange to connections, and open spaces that may accommodate artwork relating to nature, transportation, recreation, or sustainability. Up to four artists or artist teams will be short-listed as semi-finalists and asked to prepare a proposal. Semi-finalists will receive a $2,000 honorarium to prepare and present the proposal in person, though they must cover all proposal expenses including travel and per diem from this amount.
The budget for this commission is approximately $300,000, inclusive of all costs including design fee, consultation fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, per diem, project documentation, and contingency. Applicants must submit eight digital images of previously completed artworks, a statement of interest (500 words/2,000 characters maximum), and a one- to two-page résumé via the CaFÉ online system. Artists working with kinetic, sound, or media works may submit a supplemental DVD of no more than five minutes. The entry deadline is March 1, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. MST. A pre-submission meeting and site visit will be held on February 10, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Wellington E Webb Municipal Building, 201 W. Colfax Ave. Semi-finalist selection is scheduled for March 31, 2010, with finalist selection in mid-May 2010 and finalist notification in June 2010.
