About This Call
The City of Denver is seeking artists to create a public art installation for Berkeley Lake Park. Better Denver Bond funding has enabled improvements along the northern end of the park, including a retaining wall for noise pollution and wastewater control, lake drainage, fish spawning and hatchery areas, pedestrian trails, an improved dog park, and mitigation ponds for storm water runoff. Denver Parks and Recreation is working jointly with the Army Corps of Engineers on these improvements.
The selection panel seeks a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork appropriate for Berkeley Lake Park and its diverse community. Free-standing artwork near or placed on the park plaza will be considered, as will installations and sculptures of appropriate scale and materials. The panel is open to three-dimensional artwork in all media and materials that highlight the serenity of the area and are mindful of the park's functionality for fishermen. The panel has suggested the artwork be a beacon utilizing lighting components, with an educational or interactive aspect encouraged to accommodate the volume of children using the park. All artwork must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials.
This project is open to artists who currently live and work in Colorado, regardless of background or experience level. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Approximately $21,000 USD is available for this commission, inclusive of all expenses including design, consultation fees, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and travel. Applicants must submit eight digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest of no longer than 2000 characters via www.callforentry.org. Single artists and multi-person collaborations may apply. The entry deadline is April 27, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. MDT. Semi-finalists will be selected in May 2012, with finalist selection and notification in June 2012. Selected semi-finalists will be interviewed by the selection panel and may be asked to submit a formal proposal, for which they will receive an honorarium.
