About This Call

The Clearwater Public Art & Design Program, in partnership with the Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization and District Seven of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to create a project that will enhance the new U.S. 19 and State Road 60 Interchange in Clearwater, Florida. This public art commission is open to all professional artists and artist teams residing within the United States. Artists may apply as a team, but the application should clearly describe the contribution of each collaborator. Artists living and working within the state of Florida are strongly encouraged to apply.

The project budget is limited to artistic design to provide for the enhancement of project features or the addition of new features. The selected artist(s) will be awarded compensation in the form of a design fee based upon 12% of the total construction cost of the project. The commissioning agency will provide support for materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and other consultation fees such as structural engineering and insurance. Recommended art components include lighting and LED additions or enhancements to existing structures, or decorative Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) precast concrete panel patterned form inserts. Murals will not be permitted. All designs must conform to current highway engineering, design, construction and maintenance criteria and must not adversely impact the Department's preexisting construction schedule.

Applications must be submitted online via the CaFE website by Friday, February 25, 2011, 11:59:59 p.m. Mountain Time. There is no application fee. Applicants must submit six images with pertinent information, a current artist's resume emphasizing public art projects, and a letter of interest describing why you are interested in this project. An Artist Selection Panel will select up to three finalists to create site-specific proposals. Finalists will receive an honoraria of $500 USD per artist/artist team. The tentative project completion/dedication date is July 2014.
