About This Call

The City of Cedar Rapids and the Visual Arts Commission are requesting proposals for art to complement the new convention complex in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The complex includes the renovation of the U.S. Cellular Center arena and the former Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel. When completed in spring 2013, it will become the second largest convention and events complex in Iowa, projected to attract more than 375,000 visitors annually.

Artwork will be commissioned for three areas: Area #1 Second Floor Ballroom Pre-Function (2 locations, 5'-10" wide X 6'6" high, wall mounted in recessed niches, $5,000-$10,000 each); Area #2 Administrative Lobby (1 location, 6'-6" wide X 10'-4" tall, $5,000-$10,000); and Area #3 Second Floor Elevator Lobby (1 location, 5'-10" wide X 6'-6" high, $2,500-$5,000). Artists may submit proposals for all areas, one area, or a combination. For Area #1, artists must agree to complete art for both locations or the proposal will be disqualified.

The architectural concept draws upon natural, environmental, and geographical elements of the region. Art pieces should enhance the building's natural sensitivities while capturing the progressive spirit of Cedar Rapids. Artists must commit to a meeting schedule (October 19, 26, and November 2) with the Visual Arts Commission, with final concepts due November 9. The completed art must be ready for installation by April 1, 2013. Artists must provide proof of professional liability insurance and sign an artist agreement with the City. Payment will be made within 30 days of delivery. Proposals must include a statement of interest, chronological resume demonstrating relevant work experience in public art or commissioned projects, and a preliminary concept. Artists must submit 6 different pieces of artwork as digital images conforming to CAFE guidelines. Questions should be directed to Seth Gunnerson at [email protected] or 319-286-5129.
