City of Cedar Rapids Convention Center Focal Public Art Opportunity

The City of Cedar Rapids Convention Center is seeking an artist to create a focal public art piece for the box office wall. The selected artist will receive a $100,000 budget that must cover all fabrication, creation, installation, lighting, and transportation costs.

Artists must commit to the outlined timeline and process. Three artist meetings are scheduled for July 13th, 20th, and 27th, with final design completion required by July 30th, 2012. The artist will have from August 1, 2012 through February 1, 2013 to complete the artwork, with installation occurring in early February 2013. Meetings may be conducted via conference call, video call, or in person depending on the artist's location. The artist must provide weekly progress updates during this period.

The artwork should reflect the region and Cedar Rapids, be an original and site-specific piece, and maximize the full box office wall space. Lighting is an integral component and must allow pedestrians to view the piece during evening hours. The artwork should complement but not blend with the interior color scheme. Proposals must include a statement of interest, current resume demonstrating relevant public art or commission experience, and a preliminary concept describing the artist's approach and how the piece will maximize the wall space. Artists must submit 6 different pieces of artwork as digital images conforming to Café guidelines; different angles of the same piece will impact proposal ranking. All proposals must be submitted 100% through Café; incomplete applications will be disqualified. Artists must be willing to sign an artist agreement with the City of Cedar Rapids and provide proof of professional liability insurance. The artist is responsible for all installation costs within the $100,000 budget.
