About This Call
City of Boulder and Office of Arts and Culture Public Art Program is seeking artists to apply for a public art opportunity at the 11th & Spruce Street Parking Garage in Boulder, CO. This opportunity seeks a public artwork that reflects a "first impression" of downtown Boulder, experienced by both vehicular users of the parking structure as well as multimodal and pedestrian users in the immediate vicinity. The selection panel is open to a wide range of public art mediums including 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional, light, and sound artworks. A total project budget of $122,500 is available for this opportunity.
The selection panel identified specific goals for this public art: the artwork should be appropriate and unique, accessible from both the interior and exterior of the garage, highly visible and impactful, and should not impede with safety and functionality of the garage. The artwork should create a sense of place by connecting people to the parking structure and into greater downtown Boulder, contribute to wayfinding and orientation, and focus on locations outside of commercial frontages. Applicants are encouraged to consider unexpected locations such as alleys, rooftops, south façade, and stairwells. All public art projects must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for exterior exposure to weather, physical stresses, and potential vandalism.
Applicants may apply as a single artist or multi-person collaboration. Submissions should include up to eight digital images of existing work samples, up to two video or audio samples, a résumé or CV, and a statement of interest no longer than 2,000 characters via www.callforentry.org. The selection panel will choose three to five semi-finalists for interviews. If a formal proposal is requested, the artist will receive an honorarium to prepare and present the proposal in person. Semi-finalists are encouraged to conduct a site visit and will be expected to pay for travel expenses from the honorarium. The budget of $122,500 is inclusive of all costs including design fee, consultation fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, and contingency expenses. Entry deadline: September 28, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
