About This Call

The City of Aurora, CO is seeking a Colorado artist or team of artists to create a street mural celebrating the arrival of Stanley Marketplace in the Westerly Creek Village neighborhood of NW Aurora. Stanley Marketplace will open Labor Day Weekend in a facility that once housed the historic Stanley Aviation business and is planned as an adaptive reuse marketplace featuring a community park, indoor/outdoor event venue, office space, and dining, shopping and recreational options.

The mural should address the theme of aviation and could include historical, contemporary, or futuristic perspectives. It should be colorful and lively and will be located at the main entrance to Stanley Marketplace. The artwork should not include longitudinal markings or images that would be confused with traffic control devices such as crosswalks or lane markings. The mural will cover up to two city blocks on Clinton Street, from Montview Boulevard north to 23rd Avenue, with approximately 40,000 square feet available. Each city block is approximately 600 feet long by 34 feet wide excluding intersections.

A total of $20,000 is available for this project, covering design development, artwork creation, materials, and meetings with city staff. The City will waive permitting fees and provide traffic control materials during installation. The artist will work with community members on the actual painting of the artwork, with city staff assisting in the community engagement process and volunteer coordination. The selection process will focus on the artist's portfolio and experience working with volunteers or students on large collaborative works. Application materials include up to six images of relevant past work, resume, brief statement of interest describing relevant experiences, and a preliminary concept statement. A preliminary sketch may be included but is not required. The competition is limited to artists residing in Colorado. Project timeline: entries close June 19, 2016; artist selection complete by July 6; design approval by July 18; final artwork completion deadline August 31.
