About This Call
The City of Asheville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department announces a juried public art competition for the Art on Transit Bus Graphics Program, open to artists age 18 and older who currently live in Asheville, Arden, Black Mountain, Oteen, Skyland, Swannanoa, and Woodfin. Proof of residency is required.
Artists are invited to create original 2-D images for City of Asheville bus graphics. Two-dimensional images include photographs, computer-generated design, paintings, prints, and drawings. Text and letters are permitted as part of the overall design. Up to two design proposals will be accepted per individual or team. For the side wrap, artists may submit either one single design that can be replicated on both sides or two related designs for either side of the bus. The finished medium is laminated, pressure-sensitive adhesive vinyl, printed with solvent ink and applied to the bus surface. Bus dimensions are: Width 331" at widest point, Height 104" at highest point, Height (top of wheel wells to top of bus) 70", Width (between wheel wells) 140", Width (of wheel wells) 50". Templates are available at www.ashevillenc.gov/parks or by contacting the project manager.
Three artists will be selected and each will receive an honorarium of $750. The application deadline is January 20, 2010 at 5:00pm EST. Finalists will be selected by January 26, 2010, with bus wrap fabrication in early February 2010 and rollout on February 12, 2010. Completed entries will be reviewed by a five-member jury including members of the City of Asheville Public Art Board and Transit Commission, a bus driver, graphic designer, and artist or arts professional. All application materials must be submitted electronically through CaFÉ at http://www.callforentry.org. There is no application fee. Submit digital images of proposed artwork, one current résumé, a one-page letter of interest describing your approach to the project, and an annotated image list with title, artist name, media, and image number.
