About This Call

The City of Charlotte is seeking professional artists living and working in the United States to integrate art into the City LYNX Gold Line - Phase II expansion. The Phase II expansion will add 11 stops—9 west of the Phase I line extending to Johnson C. Smith University and French Street, and 2 east of the original line crossing Independence Boulevard and stopping at Sunnyside Ave. The line divides into three zones: West Side (4 stops), Center City (5 stops), and East Side (2 stops). Art opportunities exist at the stops and in transition areas along the corridor. CATS will select 3-5 artists to incorporate art into the stops and along the corridor.

Art opportunities include stop opportunities (shelter glass windscreens, benches, platform paving and entry ramps) and corridor opportunities (overhead catenary system poles, cross walks and median paving, interior of streetcar vehicles). The $700,000 art budget will be distributed amongst selected artists and determined based on artist experience, reputation, accessibility, proposed art requirements, and scope of work. The budget is intended to cover artist fees, materials, insurance, engineering, photography, digital files, fabrication, delivery, travel, and other expenses.

Eligible artists living and working in the United States are invited to submit digital applications through CaFÈ. There is no application fee. Applications must be received by 5pm EST on September 19, 2015. Submissions must include no more than six art images of recently completed 2-D and/or 3-D work, an annotated image sheet with title, media, dimensions, completion date, location, commissioning agency, budget, and brief description, a resume or CV (up to 2 pages), and three professional references. Professional visual artists with experience in public art or comparable visual art experience are eligible. Students are not eligible. A selection panel of contemporary art professionals will review submissions and select artists based on past work demonstrating excellence, connection to site and adjacent community, public impact, durability, minimal maintenance requirement, and safety.
