About This Call

The Cincinnati Art Museum announces the Marjorie Schiele Prize, a triennial competition honoring the work and legacy of Marjorie Schiele, a Cincinnati artist whose generous bequest established it. Eligibility is restricted to living artists who present a vision or model for transforming present reality by stretching the limitations of painting and sculpture. Applicants must hold a degree from an accredited school of art and have received prior recognition in publication or exhibition beyond a local level. Entrants must be over 18 years of age as of December 9, 2011.

The Marjorie Schiele Prize will alternate between being an open competition leading to an exhibition judged by art peers and critics, and a professional invitational with a jury of peers and critics pre-selecting nominators and winners. The jurors for the first Marjorie Schiele Prize are Claudia Gould (Director, Jewish Museum, New York), Max Hollein (Director, Städel Museums, Frankfurt, Germany), Robert Storr (Dean, Yale School of Art, New Haven), Paola Antonelli (Senior Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, Museum of Modern Art, New York), and Cincinnati Art Museum Director Aaron Betsky. $25,000 in prize money will be awarded at the discretion of the jury. Nominated or selected works will be exhibited at the Cincinnati Art Museum or a venue it designates for no less than two months in the fall of 2012. Winning works must be offered to the Art Museum for accessioning into its permanent collection.

Submissions must be received by midnight Mountain Time on March 30, 2012. Materials include: current résumé, two-page proposal outlining the project and how it fulfills the stated aspirations of the Prize, up to ten image files representing the project artworks, and a PDF dossier containing recent press and critical response from the previous two years. Only digital submissions via CaFÉ are accepted; slides or hard copy materials will not be accepted. Maximum ten images per submission. All artists will be notified of finalist selections by email by May 15, 2012. Winners and runners-up will be announced July 2, 2012.
