About This Call

MACLA announces its third Chicana/o Biennial, an exhibition and public forum to take inventory of and invite reflection on the continuously emergent energy, critical edge, and aesthetic interventions within contemporary Chicano art. The exhibition runs June 5-August 15, 2009, with an opening reception on June 5, 2009.

This no-fee juried exhibition is open to all artists who self-identify as Chicana/o. The biennial takes a thematic approach, asking: What are the pressing concerns at this moment in time? (politics) What does Chicana/o art look like today? (aesthetics) How do artists engage the community? (activism & organizing). MACLA is looking for artwork that is politically charged and aesthetically innovative, addressing one or more of these questions. Work depicting the intersection of art, technology, and new media is welcome, as are proposals and projects from disciplines/genres/activities not normally displayed in gallery settings. All artwork must have been created within the last three years (2006-2009).

Submit 1-5 digital images, image list, artist's statement, artist bio, and contact info via www.callforentry.org. For installation work, submit visual images and a full written description with supporting materials (drawings/diagrams) via email to [email protected]. For video or new media, submit VHS, DVD, or PC-compatible CD with program to MACLA, 510 South First Street, San Jose, CA 95113. All selected artists will receive a $200 artist honorarium. MACLA will insure all selected works for their designated value during the exhibition. Limited shipping assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis for artists outside the San Francisco Bay Area. Artist notification will be mailed April 3, 2009. Jurors: Favianna Rodríguez, Eugene Rodríguez, and Alejandra Chaverri.
