About This Call
The City of Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is seeking professional artists living and working in the Southeastern U.S. to integrate art into the City's Streetcar Starter Project (SSP). The SSP will feature six stops located along a 1.5 mile line beginning in Uptown Charlotte at the Charlotte Transportation Center on Trade Street and ending at Presbyterian Hospital. Each stop location will include two passenger shelters for a total of 12 shelters.
There are two separate art opportunities. The primary opportunity is to integrate art into the glass windscreens in the back of each passenger shelter. CATS is seeking artists who create two-dimensional art and are comfortable engaging local communities. A single artist may be selected to create art for all 12 shelters or multiple artists could be selected to work at different stops. The secondary opportunity is the Stop Indicator Art Poles to be located in front of each passenger shelter. This opportunity is directed to artists who create three-dimensional art and are comfortable working with the community. A single artist or multiple artists could be selected to create the art stop poles.
For the Windscreen Opportunity, submit no more than six images of recently completed 2-D work, an annotated image sheet, a one-page resume or CV, and three professional references. For the Stop Indicator Poles Opportunity, submit no more than six images of recently completed 3-D work, an annotated image sheet, a one-page resume or CV, and three professional references. There is no application fee. Professional artists living and working in the Southeastern United States are eligible to apply. Students are not eligible. Eligible artists may apply to both opportunities only if they submit relevant 2-D examples for the Windscreen Opportunity and relevant 3-D examples for the Stop Indicator Pole Opportunity. The art budget is $190,000. Submissions will be evaluated on quality, impact on the public, connection to the site or adjacent community, appropriateness for the site, durability of materials and fabrication, resistance to vandalism, and minimum maintenance requirements.
