About This Call

Charlotte Street Foundation is seeking applications from visual artists, performing artists, and writers for its Studio Residency Program. Applications are due Monday, May 16, 2016 for year-long studio residency terms beginning September 2016-17. The application process is competitive and based solely on the merit of artist work samples and written statements, reviewed by an independent jury panel.

Entering its thirteenth year, the Studio Residency Program provides free studio and rehearsal spaces to exceptional young, emerging, and accomplished artists. Approximately 25 artists will be in residence during each year-long term. The program offers studio space, required monthly meetings, presentations, studio visits, mentorships, public programs, exhibitions, and access to a multidisciplinary network of artist peers. Studios are located at Town Pavilion, 1100 Walnut, 6th Floor, Kansas City, MO 64106. Visual artist studios offer 24-hour access with private or shared spaces. Performing artist studios include a rehearsal space with dance stage and Marley floor, and a separate rehearsal space with piano, with shared 24-hour access and dedicated time slots. Writer studios are private with 24-hour access and wireless internet. All studios are workspaces only with no residential accommodations, furnishings, or specialized equipment.

Program components include monthly all-resident group meetings (third Monday of each month), mentorships with volunteer artists or arts professionals, studio visits from artists and curators, an annual Spring Open Studios Weekend, resident exhibitions and performances, and a residency blog. Artists are required to volunteer 5 hours per month assisting with Charlotte Street efforts. Applicants will be notified by July 2016. Full-time students are not eligible. Visual artists working in all media are encouraged to apply, though toxic materials, kilns, welding equipment, and heavy machinery are prohibited. Performing artists in all disciplines and writers in all genres are welcome; writers with interest in cross-disciplinary work and critical writing about art and contemporary culture are particularly encouraged.
