About This Call

Charlotte Street Foundation is seeking applications from visual artists, performing artists, and writers for its Studio Residency Program. Applications are due Monday, May 11, 2015, for year-long studio residency terms beginning September 2015-16. Entering its twelfth year, the program provides free studio and rehearsal spaces to exceptional young, emerging, and accomplished artists. Through studio space, required monthly meetings, presentations, studio visits, mentorships, public programs, and access to a multi-disciplinary network of artist peers, the program encourages creative production, artistic experimentation, collaboration, professional development, and community building.

Studio spaces are available at two venues: Town Pavilion (1100 Walnut, 6th floor) providing space for visual artists, performing artists/ensembles, and writers; and pARTnership Place (906 Grand, 13th floor) providing space for visual artists. Visual artist studios offer 24-hour access in private or shared spaces. Performing artist studios include a rehearsal space with dance stage and Marley floor, and a separate rehearsal space with piano, with shared 24-hour access and dedicated time slots. Writer studios provide 24-hour access to private or semi-private spaces with wireless internet. All studios are workspaces only with no residential accommodations, furnishings, or specialized equipment. Toxic materials are prohibited, and studios do not enable use of kilns, welding equipment, or heavy machinery.

Program components include monthly all-resident meetings (third Monday evening), mentorships with volunteer artists or arts professionals, studio visits from artists and curators, Spring Open Studios Weekend, and opportunities for exhibitions, performances, and public programs. Residents are required to volunteer 5 hours per month assisting with Charlotte Street efforts. Residencies are granted for one-year terms; artists making exceptional use of studios may apply for a second year. Full-time students are not eligible. Visual artists working in all media are encouraged to apply. Performing artists in all disciplines are welcome, including theatre, dance, music, and cross-disciplinary work. Writers in all genres are encouraged to apply, with particular preference for those interested in cross-disciplinary work and critical/expository writing about art and contemporary culture.

Applications require contact information, two professional references, resume/CV, statement describing work/intent/vision (500 words max), work samples from the past 3 years (up to 10 jpegs for visual artists; up to 3 audio or video samples for performing artists; up to 5 jpegs plus 2 audio/video samples for visual artists working in mixed media; up to 3 writing samples not exceeding 10,000 words total), and a statement of intent addressing studio need, planned use, estimated weekly hours, materials and processes, goals for participation, and contributions to the resident community.
