About This Call

Charlotte Street Foundation is a non-profit, Kansas City-based organization seeking applications from visual artists, performing artists, and writers for its Urban Culture Project Studio Residency Program. The year-long studio residency terms run September 2013-14. Entering its tenth year, the program provides free studio spaces and rehearsal spaces to exceptional young, emerging, and accomplished area artists. Charlotte Street provides studios at two downtown Kansas City venues: Town Pavilion, 1100 Walnut, 6th floor (providing space for approximately 14 visual artists, up to 10 performing artists/ensembles, and up to 4 writers); and pARTnership Place, 906 Grand, 13th floor (providing space for 7 visual artists). Visual artist studios offer 24-hour access in private or shared spaces. Performing artist studios include a rehearsal space with dance stage and Marley floor, and a separate rehearsal space for music and theatre/performance artists, with shared 24-hour access and dedicated time slots. Writer studios, launching with 2013-14 residencies, provide private or semi-private spaces with wireless internet access. All studios are work spaces only with no residential accommodations, furnishings, or access to specialized equipment.

Program components include monthly all-resident group meetings (third Monday evening of each month), mentorships with established artists or arts professionals, studio visits from artists and curators, open studios, and resident exhibitions/performances. Residents selected for 2013-2014 terms will have opportunities to present work through Pecha Kucha-style presentations and a studio residents exhibition/showcase at Charlotte Street's la Esquina gallery. Artists participating in the program are required to volunteer 5 hours per month assisting with Urban Culture Project efforts, including gallery sitting, distributing promotional materials, and assisting with exhibitions.

Eligibility: Full-time students will not be considered. Visual artists working in all media are encouraged to apply; toxic materials are prohibited, and studios do not enable use of kilns, welding equipment, or heavy machinery. Performing artists working in all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Writers working in all genres are encouraged to apply, with particular preference given to those interested in cross-disciplinary work and critical/expository writing about art and contemporary culture. Applications due May 30, 2013. Work samples required: up to 10 jpegs for visual artists, up to 3 audio or video samples for performing artists, up to 3 writing samples for writers (no more than 10,000 words total). Complete applications must include contact information, two professional references, resume/CV, artist or writer statement (500 words max), and responses to specific questions about studio space needs, estimated hours per week, work plans, goals, and contributions to the program community.
