About This Call

Charlotte Street Foundation is seeking applications from visual artists, performing artists, and writers for its Studio Residency Program. Year-long studio residency terms run September 2018 through September 2019. The application deadline is May 15th, 2018. Applications are accepted exclusively through www.callforentry.org and are reviewed competitively by an independent jury based on the merit of work samples and written statements.

Entering its fifteenth year, the Studio Residency Program provides free studio and rehearsal spaces to exceptional young, emerging, and accomplished artists. Approximately 30 artists will be in residence during each year-long term. Studio spaces are located at Town Pavilion, 1100 Walnut, 6th Floor, Kansas City, MO 64106. Visual artist studios offer 24-hour access in private or shared spaces. Performing artist studios include a rehearsal space with dance stage and Marley floor, and a separate rehearsal space with piano, with shared 24-hour access and dedicated time slots. Writer studios are private and semi-private with wireless internet access and 24-hour access. All studios are workspaces only with no residential accommodations, furnishings, or specialized equipment provided.

Program components include monthly all-resident group meetings (third Monday of each month), mentorships with volunteer artists or arts professionals, studio visits from artists and curators, annual Spring Open Studios, resident exhibitions and performances, and a residency blog. Residents are required to volunteer 5 hours per month assisting with Charlotte Street efforts. Applicants must submit contact information, two professional references, resume/CV, a statement describing work and vision (500 words max), work samples from the past 3 years, and a statement of intent addressing studio needs, planned use, estimated weekly hours, materials and processes, goals for participation, and contributions to the artist community. Applicants will be notified by July 2018. Full-time students are not eligible. Visual artists working in all media are encouraged to apply, though toxic materials, kilns, welding equipment, and heavy machinery are prohibited. Performing artists in all disciplines and writers in all genres are encouraged to apply, with particular preference for those interested in cross-disciplinary work.
