About This Call
The Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards seek to recognize, encourage, and significantly support Kansas City-based artists creating original, exceptional, new work in all genres of performance. These awards provide artists with financial support, critical recognition, and public exposure to reward artistic accomplishment and support continued development of artists' work and careers. Artists must be generative artists—creators of original new work.
Each 2019 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Fellow receives an unrestricted cash grant of $10,000 and recognition through announcements to media, web-based marketing and promotion, and special events. Selection criteria include strength of artistic work-to-date, promise for future artistic achievement, commitment and demonstration of innovation/experimentation in form, content, process, and/or presentation, and potential impact of the award on continued artistic development.
Eligibility requirements: Applicants must currently live and have lived for at least one year prior to the application deadline in the five-county Greater Kansas City metro area (Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte, Wyandotte). Artists must be at least 21 years of age by the application deadline and may not be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program. If an artist has earned an undergraduate degree, the completion date must be at least 12 months earlier than the application deadline. Collaborative groups are eligible if well-established, creating generative work in an ongoing collaborative manner, with each member playing a generative role and the group not incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit. Previous Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award recipients are not eligible to apply.
Awarded artists are expected to be residents of Kansas City during the award year and must keep Charlotte Street informed of all scheduled exhibitions and public engagement. They must also identify at least one scheduled performance or plan one public event during the award year to be promoted or hosted in affiliation with the award.
Applications must be completed online by November 18, 2018, at 11:59 PM Mountain Time. Required materials include an artist's statement (500 words or less), artist intent/value of award statement (350 words or less), resume/CV (5 page maximum), and work samples documenting up to three original works created within the past three years. Work samples should total no more than five minutes and are the most important component of the application. The selection panel will review applications from November 2018 through January 2019, selecting ten semi-finalists for in-person meetings on February 8, 2019. For technical assistance, contact Charlotte Street Foundation at 816.221.5115 or [email protected].
