Charlotte Street Foundation: Generative Performance Award 2016

Charlotte Street Foundation invites artists living and working in the 5-County Greater Kansas City Metro Area to apply for its 2016 Generative Performing Artist Awards. Two Awards of $10,000 each will be distributed in 2016.

The Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards seek to recognize, encourage, and significantly support artists creating exceptional new work in the fields of dance, theatre, music, opera, sound art, performance art, multimedia performance, spoken word, puppetry, and hybrid/interdisciplinary versions of all above. Artists must be generative artists—that is, the creators of original new work, rather than solely performers or interpreters of works generated by others. Awarded artists will be those who are actively creating new, contemporary work, produce work that is innovative/experimental in terms of form, content, process, and/or presentation, and demonstrate a sustained commitment to deepening/expanding their work and generative practices.

Each 2016 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Fellow will receive an unrestricted cash grant of $10,000, be recognized by Charlotte Street Foundation at the time of Award announcement and throughout 2016 through announcements to media, web-based promotion, and commissioned writing about their work, and partner with Charlotte Street Foundation to identify at least one opportunity for public engagement in association with the Award.

Eligibility: Artists must currently live and have lived for at least one year prior to the application deadline in the Five County Greater Kansas City Metro area (Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte, Wyandotte); be at least 21 years of age by the application deadline; be at least one year out of undergraduate school and not currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, and must not have made arrangements to be a full-time student from January 1-December 31, 2016. Collaborative groups are eligible if the group is well established and creating generative performing work in an ongoing, deeply collaborative manner, the primary generative performing work of each member is as a member of the collaborative group, each member plays a generative role in the creation of the group's work, and the group is not incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Previous Charlotte Street Award recipients are not eligible to apply.

Selection Criteria: Strength of artistic work to date, promise for future artistic achievement, commitment to and demonstration of innovation/experimentation in terms of form, content, process, and/or presentation, and potential impact of Award on continued artistic development.

Application Deadline: Monday, November 16, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. MST. Applications must be completed online through www.callforentry.org. Required materials include: Artist's Statement (500 words or less) addressing the nature of generative, performance-based work, driving intentions, ideas and influences, and creative processes; Artist Intent/Value of Award (350 words or less) describing why the Award would be valuable; Resume/CV including history of generative performance-based work (5 pages maximum); and Work Samples consisting of documentation of up to 3 original works created within the past 3 years, submitted as either one 10-minute compilation or 3 separate samples totaling no more than 10 minutes in length.

Selection Process: A selection panel of professionals with expertise in performing arts will select Fellows through a competitive process. Semi-finalists will be notified in early February 2016 and will provide 20-minute in-person presentations with the selection panel in February-March 2016. All semi-finalists will be notified of final decisions within three days of the final panel meeting.

Award Year Expectations: Awarded artists will be expected to be residents of Kansas City or one of the eligible five counties during 2016, keep Charlotte Street Foundation informed of all scheduled performances and public engagement opportunities, identify at least one scheduled performance or public event to be promoted or hosted in affiliation with the Award, and submit a year-end final report.
