About This Call
The Charlotte Street Visual Artist Awards recognize and support Kansas City-based visual artists of all media who are creating exceptional contemporary work. The awards provide financial support, critical recognition, and public exposure to reward artistic accomplishment and support continued development of artists' work and careers.
Each 2020 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award Fellow receives an unrestricted cash grant of $10,000, recognition through media announcements and web-based marketing, and inclusion in the 2020 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award exhibition at Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art with a printed brochure featuring images and commissioned writing about their work. Selection criteria include strength of artistic work to date, promise for future artistic achievement, commitment to innovation and experimentation in form, content, process, and/or presentation, and potential impact of the award on continued artistic development.
Eligibility requirements: Applicants must currently live and have lived for at least one year prior to the application deadline in the five-county Greater Kansas City Metro area (Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte, Wyandotte). Artists must be at least 21 years of age by the application deadline and may not be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program. If the artist has earned an undergraduate degree, the completion date must be at least 12 months earlier than the application deadline. Previous Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award recipients are not eligible to apply. Collaborative groups are eligible if all members meet eligibility criteria, the group is well established and creating work in an ongoing, deeply collaborative manner, the primary work of each member is as part of the collaborative group, each member plays an essential role, and the collective is not incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Award recipients are expected to remain residents of Kansas City or one of the eligible five counties during the award year, keep Charlotte Street informed of scheduled exhibitions and public engagements, have work available for the 2020 Visual Artist Award exhibition, and be available for associated award events and public programs as reasonably possible. The selection process involves an open call followed by a competitive review by a panel of regional and national visual arts professionals. Ten semi-finalists will be selected for in-person studio visits on January 30 & 31, 2020, with award recipients announced on February 11, 2020.
Applications must be submitted online at www.callforentry.org and include an artist's statement (500 words or less), resume/CV (5 page maximum), and work samples. Work samples may be submitted as up to 10 high-resolution JPEG images of work created in the past 3 years, up to 5 video samples totaling no more than 10 minutes in length, or a combination of 6 images. For technical assistance, contact Charlotte Street Foundation at 816.221.5115 or [email protected].
