About This Call

Charlotte Street Foundation seeks visual, performing, writers, multidisciplinary or hybrid artists for an 18-month residency program (November 27, 2017 through May 31, 2019) based at 4001 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri. Artists will work with area community members and invested supporters to convert a commercial space into a neighborhood engaged studio community in the Troost Corridor. The program supports community-based artistic practices that engage neighborhood stakeholders in the artistic process and provides a collaborative platform, venue, and resources to develop place-based, responsive projects embedded in vital Kansas City neighborhoods.

Selected artists receive committed funding for project materials, supplies and marketing; free access to the collaborative workspace; professional development including a Community Arts Training Module and monthly cohort meetings with visiting artists, community activists, government officials and media representatives; mentorship opportunities with advisors and community leaders; and direct engagement with the immediate neighborhood through partnerships with neighborhood stakeholders, community meals, celebrations, public events and presentations. The workspace is ADA accessible, accessible via public transportation, and offers free on-site private parking.

Eligibility requirements: artists must be at least 21 years of age by the application deadline; not currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program (if holding an undergraduate degree, completion must be at least 12 months before the deadline); able to participate for the full 18-month duration; able to attend regular meetings (approximately 1-2 per month) and the Residents Orientation (week of November 27-December 3); able to attend all parts of the training module with the first installment December 8-10; and willing to positively and respectfully engage with local and regional community members, leadership, government, and media. Preference is given to artists whose work reflects a desire to work collaboratively or within a community context, demonstrates awareness of cultural, regional, socio-economic or political paradigms, shows interest in the history and current state of Troost Avenue/Corridor, and demonstrates the foundation's key values of risk, collaboration, openness, and excellence. Fifty percent of spots are prioritized for participants living or working within 5 miles of the residency location. Work samples should include 1-10 images and may include up to 5 audio files and 5 video files.
