About This Call
Charlotte Street Foundation invites visual artists living and working in the 5-County Greater Kansas City Metro Area (Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte, Wyandotte counties) to apply for its 2014 Visual Artist Awards. Three unrestricted cash awards of $10,000 each will be distributed in 2014. The awards recognize and support Kansas City-based visual artists of all media who are creating exceptional, contemporary work. Each award fellow will receive an unrestricted cash grant of $10,000, be recognized by Charlotte Street Foundation through media announcements and web-based promotion, and have their work featured in the 2014 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Fellows Exhibition at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, accompanied by a printed brochure with images and commissioned writing about their work.
Eligibility requirements: Artists must currently live and have lived for at least one year prior to the application deadline in the Five County Greater Kansas City Metro area; be at least 21 years of age by the application deadline; not currently be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student or plan to be from January 1-December 31, 2014; and have completed undergraduate school at least one year prior to the application deadline if previously enrolled full-time. Artists who have previously received Charlotte Street Visual Artist Awards are not eligible to apply. Collectives and collaboratives are eligible if all members meet eligibility criteria, the group is well-established and creating work in an ongoing collaborative manner, the primary work of each member is as part of the collaborative group, each member plays an essential role, and the collective is not incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Award fellows are expected to remain based in Kansas City for the award year, keep Charlotte Street Foundation informed of all scheduled exhibitions and public engagements, have work available for exhibition in the Fall 2014 Visual Artist Awards Exhibition, and be available for associated awards events and public programs as reasonably possible. Applications must be completed online through www.callforentry.org by December 5, 2013 at midnight. Required materials include an artist's statement (500 words or less), resume/CV (5 pages maximum), and work samples consisting of up to 10 images of work created in the past 3 years, or up to 5 minutes of video work, or a combination using the formula of 2 images equaling 1 minute of video. A work sample list corresponding to submitted samples must also be provided. Selection will be conducted by a panel of visual arts professionals. Semi-finalists will be notified by early March 2014 and will receive 30-minute in-person studio visits in March/April 2014, with final award fellows notified following studio visits and panel deliberations.
