About This Call

Charlotte Street Foundation, a non-profit, artist-centered organization based in Kansas City, Missouri, invites applications from eligible visual artists for the 2012 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Awards. The deadline for applications is November 14, 2011.

Eligibility requirements: You must be a visual artist who has resided in the five-county Metropolitan Kansas City area (Jackson, Clay, Platte, Wyandotte, Johnson counties) since at least November 14, 2010; be 21 years of age or older as of November 14, 2011; have graduated from undergraduate school prior to June 30, 2010 (college attendance is not required); and not be a full-time student or plan to be a full-time student during November 14, 2011-June 30, 2012. Artists who have previously received Charlotte Street Visual Artist Awards are not eligible to apply.

Submissions will be reviewed through a two-phased process. Semi-finalists will be notified by February 1, 2012, and will participate in in-person studio visits of 30 minutes each on February 20-21, 2012. Artists must plan to be available on these dates if selected. Application requirements include up to 10 images of artwork created in the last three years, or up to 3 video samples (up to 5 minutes total), or a combination of up to 5 images and up to 3 minutes of video; a list detailing all work samples; and a current resume including exhibition history. Awards recipients are selected based on the quality of work as evidenced in submitted materials, accomplishments to date and promise for continued development, relevance of work to local, regional, national, and international artmaking practices and contemporary art discourses, and relevance to the contemporary moment and culture. The Awards Selection Panel includes Michael Rooks (High Museum of Art, Atlanta), Kris Kuramitsu (independent curator, Los Angeles), Stacy Switzer (Artistic Director, Grand Arts, Kansas City), Julian Zugazagoitia (Director, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City), and Barbara O'Brien (Chief Curator, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City).
