About This Call

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission (CHPAC) seeks qualifications from artists and/or artist teams to create public artwork(s) for Art Area II of the Downtown Economic Development Initiative Lot 5 Project in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The public art budget for this project is estimated to be $100,000. The opportunity is open to all artists and artist teams working in any media. North Carolina artists are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience working on projects that focus on sustainability, light, and/or water is a plus.

The Lot 5 Site is approximately 1.73 acres located in downtown Chapel Hill at the intersections of West Franklin, Church, and West Rosemary Streets. Public landscape artist Mikyoung Kim was selected as the lead artist for the overall project and has developed an Arts Masterplan for the site identifying two Art Areas. Art Area II, along Rosemary and Church Streets, will be the responsibility of the artist selected through this Request for Qualifications. The Arts Masterplan offers two possible concepts for Art Area II: Concept A focuses on sustainability issues and rain water harvesting, with possible integration of a below grade retention basin; Concept B focuses on capturing and modulating natural light with sustainable approaches. The selected artist(s) will collaborate with the architectural and landscape team and the lead artist throughout the project.

Applications must be submitted online through CaFE and include: ten digital images of relevant work, resume for each artist, a Letter of Interest (not to exceed 4,000 characters) explaining interest in the project and past experience, availability and schedule from January to June 2008, and three professional references with contact information. An Artist Recommendation Committee will review submissions and select finalists for interviews in Chapel Hill. The final recommendation is approved by the CHPAC, Chapel Hill Town Council, and Ram Development Company. Deadline for electronic application materials is January 11, 2008 at 11:59 p.m. MST. For questions, contact [email protected] or call 919-968-2749.
