About This Call
Stapleton announces a public art opportunity with a commission of $150,000. This project is open only to artists living in Colorado.
The focus of this public art project is a two-block median on Central Park Boulevard north of Montview Boulevard, the primary connection to Stapleton from the south. The site is approximately a quarter of a mile in length, with median widths varying from approximately six feet at the southern end to 40 feet as the median curves, and 56 feet wide at the location where the public art will be installed. The medians are bounded by Wabash/Verbena Streets on the north and by 21st/23rd Streets on the south. The artwork should be composed of three to five elements in a series or sequence and should evoke a sense of momentum. It should be able to be seen and appreciated by people living and working in the area as well as those driving along Central Park Boulevard, and should be of interest to people viewing it from above, such as from nearby live-work space or office buildings. The artwork must be designed to be durable, require minimal maintenance and low cost maintenance, and must be able to withstand the intense sun, snow, wind and temperature extremes characteristic of the Denver area. The artwork should not impede or interfere with pedestrian or vehicular traffic, should not obstruct sight lines or affect traffic safety, and must comply with rules, regulations and guidelines of the City and County of Denver. If the artwork includes elements of light or requires lighting, it must comply with the Stapleton Lighting Master Plan.
Eligibility: All applicants must be legal residents of the United States and currently residing in Colorado. Applications must be submitted electronically via the CaFÉ web site at www.callforentry.org by midnight Mountain Time, Monday, October 29, 2007. Each application must include a current resume for each artist and/or team member, eight (8) digital images of relevant work with accompanying image annotation listing media, size, title, date and brief description, and an artist's statement not to exceed 250 words or 1000 characters describing the artist's/team's approach to this type of project. The Project Selection Committee will review applications on November 27th and invite three finalists to submit full proposals. These finalists will receive a design fee. On January 23rd, the Project Selection Committee will review finalist proposals, interview the finalists and make a recommendation for the commission.
