About This Call
The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission one or more professional visual artist(s) or artist team(s) to design art for the entry gate steel mesh panels at the Central Bank Sporting Complex, located at Missouri Hwy 152 & N Platte Purchase Dr, Kansas City, MO 64154.
The Central Bank Sporting Complex is a $36 million multi-sport facility scheduled for a soft opening in fall 2022, with a grand opening planned for spring 2023. The 76-acre, tournament-quality complex will feature 10 synthetic turf fields designed for year-round use, all lighted with convenient parking and on-site amenities including trail connections, inclusive playgrounds, a fieldhouse, restrooms, and concessions. The facility is the focal point of an anticipated $375 million, multi-phase development on 492 acres within Twin Creeks Village.
The entry gates consist of two main entry garden plazas with monumental scale steel mesh panels that offer high visibility and a sense of arrival. The gates have overhead coverings and integrated lighting for nighttime use. Artists may either embellish the steel mesh or replace it; if replaced, the gate panel must still meet security requirements. The gates open outwards, and art can be single-sided or double-sided. Eligible areas for art are limited to the steel mesh panels on the gates. All artistic elements may be required to comply with applicable building codes including ADA, the Uniform Building Code (UBC), and NFPA standards.
Applicants must submit 6-20 images of work samples. The budget is $40,000. Evaluation criteria include excellence, relevant prior experience with similar scale projects and stakeholder coordination, appropriateness to site and project context, and durability of materials and processes. The selection panel will select three semifinalists for interview, then select finalist(s) and one alternate. The finalist artist(s) proposal will be presented to the Municipal Art Commission for approval prior to contract development. Artists lacking public art experience may jointly submit qualifications of an experienced collaborator. Questions should be emailed to [email protected].
