About This Call

The City and County of Denver's Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create two original public artworks for the Central 70 Cover Park, located between Columbine and Clayton streets over Interstate 70 in Denver, CO. The total budget is $200,000 USD for two sculpture locations. Eligibility is open to artists or artist teams residing in the state of Colorado. A 16-member selection panel of community representatives, arts and design professionals, and civic leaders will select one artist or artist team for this allocated budget.

The Central 70 Cover Park is a four-acre park constructed over I-70 that will serve as an active community asset with opportunities for sporting events, outdoor movies, concerts, and farmers markets. The park includes an amphitheater, walking paths, garden areas, a soccer field, splash pad, tot lot, and playground. Two "bookend" sculpture locations have been identified—one on the Columbine Street end and one on the Clayton Street end of the park.

The selection panel emphasizes cultural diversity, local history, and community resiliency. Artworks should reflect the rich cultures of the area, demonstrate connection to the community, be inspiring and inter-generational, and have an educational focus. Works could be playful and kid-friendly. Artists should consider accessibility for all and note that electricity is not available at the site; any lighting or electrical needs should be solar- or wind-generated. Artworks must be created using durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor display and permanent installation. Applicants must submit six digital images of past work, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters). Three finalists will be selected to create site-specific proposals and participate in virtual interviews; finalists will receive an honorarium. The selected artist or team will work with Colorado Department of Transportation, Denver Parks and Recreation, and Denver Public Art staff to finalize designs for installation.
