About This Call
The City and County of Denver seeks a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to commission an artist or artist team to create an original public artwork for the Center of Equity and Excellence in Aviation (CEEA) at Denver International Airport (DEN), as part of the Great Hall Project completion phase. A selection panel comprised of community representatives, arts and cultural professionals and civic leaders will review applications and recommend an artist or artist team for the commission. The selection panel has identified the West Terminal Entrance for public artwork with an allocated total budget up to $200,000.00 USD.
The artwork site is located on level 5 at the West Terminal Entrance, approximately 35' L x 13' W x 24' H. Artists or artist teams have the opportunity to activate this multi-story entrance with suspended, wall-applied or multi-disciplinary artwork. Artworks may be created using diverse media including audio, visual, sculptural, interactive and tactile applications. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, as the artwork will become a permanent addition to DEN and the City's Public Art Collection. Public art projects should be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials.
The City has set forth specific goals for this project: the work should speak to DEN's international audience while highlighting the vibrant culture of Denver and Colorado; create a memorable first impression for visitors to CEEA; be designed with emphasis on longevity and sustainability; engage an intergenerational audience of all ages; and spark imagination and passion for flight, innovation and exploration. DEN is interested in artworks with themes of aviation and transportation, the intersection of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), future development, storytelling of many perspectives, and the importance of promoting equitable access, representation, innovation and opportunities within the aviation industry. Collaborative, multidisciplinary artist groups and teams are encouraged to apply. Work samples should include 1-6 images and up to 1 video. International artists are eligible.
