About This Call

The City and County of Denver seeks a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to commission an artist or artist team to create an original public artwork(s) for the Center of Equity and Excellence in Aviation (CEEA) at Denver International Airport (DEN), as part of the Great Hall Completion Project. A selection panel comprised of community representatives, arts and cultural professionals and civic leaders will review applications and recommend an artist or artist team for the commission. The selection panel has identified the West Hotel Transit Center Entrance for the inclusion of public artwork(s) with an allocated total budget of approximately $800,000.00 USD.

The artwork site is located on level 1 near the RTD A-Line Train platform, RTD buses, Westin Hotel valet and Economy Parking shuttles. Artists or artist teams have the opportunity to activate the escalator environment with a multidisciplinary approach. The escalator space is approximately 100' L with varying ceiling heights up to 59', and walls, ceiling, glass and columns can be incorporated into the artwork design. In addition, artists may activate the level 4 lobby walls at the elevator entrances within CEEA, with available wall space approximately 79' L X 8.5' H. Artworks may be created using diverse media including audio, visual, sculptural, interactive and tactile applications. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, with public art projects fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials.

The artwork should speak to the international audience of DEN while highlighting the vibrant culture of Denver and the unique State of Colorado. The work should create a memorable first impression, be designed with emphasis on longevity and sustainability, and engage an intergenerational audience of all ages. DEN is interested in artworks with themes of aviation and transportation, the intersection of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), future development, storytelling of many perspectives, and the importance of promoting equitable access, representation, innovation and opportunities within the aviation industry. Collaborative, multidisciplinary artist groups and teams are encouraged to apply. Work sample requirements: 1-6 images and 0-1 video (1-6 total samples). International eligibility. Entry deadline: 10/28/24 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
