About This Call

Mission Health, in partnership with EL Design Studios & Gallery VI, is recruiting artists, galleries, and art organizations for work to be considered for purchase and display at the new Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine in Asheville. Artists are invited to submit both 2D and 3D work, with an emphasis on nature and/or culture-inspired art. All mediums including pottery, jewelry, glass, textiles, ceramics, wood, drawing, and painting are welcome. Artwork can be readily available for purchase or artists may be open to commissions.

This call is open to artists residing in the following western North Carolina counties: Avery, Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Yancey, and Watauga. Purchases will be selected by a Steering Committee of Mission leadership, charged with selecting pieces that reflect the unique art community and culture of the region. The new 12-story Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine is set to open in fall 2019.

Applications must include up to 10 images of available work or sold pieces that could potentially be commissioned, with image descriptions (not to exceed 500 characters per image) including title, year made, medium, dimensions, and wholesale price. An artist's statement (not to exceed 2,000 characters), biography (not to exceed 1 page), and resume (not to exceed 1 page) are also required. All artwork must be suitable for a healing, public hospital setting. Artwork should have a high likelihood of positively affecting viewers and promoting a calming response. Threatening, controversial, political imagery, graphic depictions of violence, sexually explicit imagery, and nudity are discouraged and will be disqualified. Three-dimensional pieces will be evaluated based on safety considerations. All artists with work selected will be subject to a background check. Artists will be notified of the selection panel's decision by December 2018.
