About This Call
Impasto Art Gallery is seeking works inspired by Day of the Dead for an exhibition running October 1-31, 2016. The opening reception is Friday, October 7th, 2016 from 6pm-8pm.
Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico on November 1 & 2. Though it coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Soul's and All Saint's Day, indigenous traditions have combined this with ancient beliefs of honoring deceased loved ones. According to tradition, the gates of heaven open at midnight on October 31, allowing the spirits of deceased children (angelitos) to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of adults come down to enjoy the festivities prepared for them.
All professional and amateur artists working in 2D mediums are welcome to submit. Accepted mediums include photography, fabric, mixed media, new media, paintings (acrylic, oil, watercolor), drawings, ink, graphite, pastels, colored pencil, and encaustic. Fiber arts are also considered. Work must be able to be hung on a wall. Video, jewelry, and sculpture are not accepted at this time. Maximum size limit is 36" on any side. Entry fee is $25.00 (non-refundable). Submit 1-3 images. Selected artists will be required to sign an artist agreement. Artist notification is September 24th, 2016. Artwork must be received by the gallery no later than September 28th, 2016.
