About This Call
The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is seeking a professional artist or artist team to incorporate art into the Hambright Park & Ride, a new 500+ parking space mobility hub in Huntersville, NC. The park and ride will provide rapid transit services to the Town of Huntersville and surrounding areas via newly constructed express lanes. The proposed location is on the south side of Hambright Road, between Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road and Interstate 77.
A primary art opportunity is the driver's comfort station, where artists may integrate art on the exterior (mosaics, metal work, etc.) in collaboration with the project architect. Artists are not limited to this option and may also include art in bus shelters, stand-alone installations, hardscapes, and other visible areas. CATS seeks artists who create two and three-dimensional work and are comfortable engaging local communities to ensure the art resonates with parking lot patrons and the surrounding community.
The art budget is $20,000 (design only), covering artist fees, materials, proposal, travel, meetings, insurance, design, mock-ups, digital files, and plans. An additional $81,000 is reserved in the project budget for fabrication, installation, and material costs. A selection panel of local art professionals will review submissions based on past work and qualifications, considering excellence in art quality, connection to site and community, impact on transit users, durability, safety, and maintenance requirements. Eligible applicants are professional artists living or working in North Carolina or South Carolina with experience in public art or comparable visual art experience. Students are not eligible. Submit 6 images of recently completed public art, an annotated image sheet, artist statement (1,000 words max), resume or CV, and three professional references by March 31, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. There is no application fee.
